#24 Red Ravens Cannot Overcome Cold Second Half Shooting and Fall to #14 Butler 55-45
Coffeyville, Kan. - On this night, the #24 NJCAA-ranked Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Women's Basketball Team struggled offensively in the second half and found themselves with their first loss of the season, suffering a 55-45 defeat at the hands of the #14 Butler Grizzlies. With the loss, the Red Ravens' overall record falls to 6-1, including a 0-1 record in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.
The Red Ravens started the game leading slightly, 17-15, after the first quarter, thanks in part to solid contributions from Red Raven freshman Esme Smith, who scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds overall in the game, and sophomore Karliey Parker, who added 12 points. However, the second quarter saw Butler respond with a 12-11 run, closing the gap at halftime, leaving the Red Ravens with a narrow 28-27 lead.
The third quarter proved challenging for Coffeyville, as the team managed only 7 points in the quarter. All 7 points in the third quarter came from free throws as Coffeyville did not have a made field goal in the quarter. Coffeyville's first points of the second half did not come until just under four minutes left in the third quarter, and the Ravens found themselves down 41-35 at the end of the third. Coffeyville was able to connect on some threes in the fourth; however, Butler did not relinquish the lead, and the final score posted was a 10-point 55-45 loss for the Red Ravens.
Offensively, Coffeyville struggled with shooting, hitting only 21.7% from the field and 25% beyond the arc compared to Butler connecting on 37% from the field and 24% from three.
Red Raven key performances included Smith's 15 points and 10 rebounds, Parker's 12 points with four assists, as well as 9 points from freshman Isabella Pehrson.
Coffeyville will look to bounce back as they will host the Pirates of Independence on Saturday, November 22nd. Tipoff in Nellis Hall is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
