Greg Iseman
Fullback (1979-1980)
Greg Iseman was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Lee’s Summit. Greg can remember early on playing football in the yard with his brother and friends, and them having a very difficult time knocking him off his feet. At the age of 15, Greg’s family moved to Baldwin City, Kansas, where he continued his participation in sports (football, basketball, golf, and baseball); although, it was in playing football that Greg excelled. During high school, Greg played under a legend and Hall of Fame coach, Merle Venable at Baldwin City where the Bulldogs posted a 23-2 record during his junior and senior years.
Greg was a good student and wanted to play football at a high level. He was lightly recruited by a handful of NAIA schools, so when Coach Dick Foster came calling, he welcomed the opportunity to become a Red Raven in the hope that his stock would increase in value.
Greg was on the special teams and played fullback during his two seasons at Coffeyville. He also played third base on the Red Ravens baseball team. Greg was selected as one of the team captains of the undefeated 1980 team and was awarded the President Trophy after the season.
At the conclusion of the 1980 season, Greg remembers having a conference with Coach Foster and relaying that very few higher division colleges were recruiting him and that he had a desire to pursue a degree in geology. Greg had worked in the oilfield during the summer of 1980 for Dickie Rolls (now Red Raven Running Back Coach Rolls). Enter Coach Foster, it wasn’t more than two weeks later, Greg had his choice of three different schools. He decided to become a Montana Grizzly because of the type of geology degree that was available.
In Missoula, Greg played on special teams and split time with senior, Mike Hagen at the fullback position during his junior year. The Grizzlies posted a 7-3 record and finished third in the Big Sky Conference. Greg was the leading returning rusher and had earned the starting fullback position as a senior. The first game of the season was against the University of Hawaii at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. During the first half of that game, the starting tailback fumbled the ball three times. At halftime, head coach Larry Donavan turned to Greg and said, “I want you to get back at the tailback position and hold on to the f***ing ball!” Greg played the rest of the season as a sprint draw tailback and the Grizzlies went on to win the Big Sky Championship and advanced to the first round of the NCAA I-AA Playoffs.
After earning a degree in geology in December of 1983, Greg accepted a position to work as a petroleum geologist for a former player/coach Jim Hutchison, who knew and revered Coach Venable. Four and a half years later, Greg became an independent petroleum geologist and spent fourteen years developing oil and gas prospects while providing wellsite supervision services to oil and gas operators. In August of 2002, Greg founded Intergy Production, LLC, an oil and gas exploration and production company that currently operates wells in central Oklahoma.
Greg met his bride, Lisa at the University of Montana and they have made their home in Edmond, Oklahoma for the past 37 years. They have three children, Matthew, who lives is Tulsa with his wife Darcy and daughter Uma (2), Ryan, who lives in Houston, and Melissa, who is in Oklahoma City.
