Red Ravens Hang On for 31-28 Defeat of #9 Butler
Coffeyville, Kan. - For the second week in a row, the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football Team defeated a nationally ranked team as they defeated the #9 NJCAA-ranked Butler Grizzlies 31-28. With the victory, Coffeyville moves to 2-1 on the season, including a 2-0 Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) record, which currently has them in first place in the conference standings.
The Red Ravens jumped out early, as Coffeyville struck first with a 37-yard field goal by freshman Aidan Burgess, opening the scoring and setting the tone for the evening. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, Red Raven quarterback Mac Armstrong connected with sophomore Khris Thomas on a 26-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 10-0 after Burgess's successful kick.
Coffeyville's offense continued to roll in the second quarter, with redshirt freshman running back Jordan Louie capping a six-play, 47-yard drive with a 9-yard rushing touchdown. Coffeyville's defense played well in the first half, helping the Red Ravens to a 17-7 halftime lead.
After halftime, Coffeyville added a 27-yard touchdown pass from Armstrong to Khris Thomas, bringing the score to 24-7 with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was a rollercoaster. The Red Ravens opened the final quarter with a defensive score as sophomore defensive back Jack Lanning had a scoop and score for 23 yards to put Coffeyville up 31-7 with 12 minutes to go in the game.
Butler mounted a fierce comeback, scoring two passing touchdowns from McNew to Nolan Chambers, followed by a 66-yard strike that brought the Grizzlies within a field goal at 31-28. The Ravens were able to run the clock out to maintain the 31-28 victory.
Statistical Highlights:
- The Ravens amassed 393 total yards, with a balanced attack of 171 passing yards and 140 rushing yards.
- Mac Armstrong threw for 171 yards, connecting on 13 of 23 attempts with two touchdowns.
- Khris Thomas led receivers with 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Jordan Louie added 64 rushing yards and a score.
Coffeyville will return to action this Saturday, October 4th, with a home date with Iowa Western College. Kickoff in Veterans Memorial Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m.
