On a night designated as "Military Night", the Coffeyville Community College Red Raven Football team was not able to accomoplish their mission and lost 62-23 to the Independence Community College Pirates. The loss puts the Red Ravens overall recored at 2-7 and 1-5 in KJCCC play.
From the start, Coffeyville found themselves playing from behind with the Pirates scoring the first two touchdowns of the game (a 78 yard punt return for a touchdown and 30 yard rushing touchdown). Those two scores along with a Pirate second quarter field goal put the Ravens in a 17-0 deficit midway through the second quarter.
The Red Raven offense on the evening came in the form of sophomore quarterback Edwin Kleinpeter Jr's feet. All three touchdown's the Ravens were able to score came off of Kleinpeter runs (19, 12 & 6 yard scores). The Ravens secured some extra points with the addition of two, two point conversions.
However, the story of the game came down to the Ravens inability to stop the Pirate offense. The Ravens gave up 567 yards of total offense to the Pirates with Independence's offense gaining large chunks of yardage on numerous plays throughout the game. Each time the Ravens were able to put some points on the board and gain a little traction, the Pirates were able to answer with a quick touchdown of their own to take the wind out of Coffeyville's sails.
After getting down early in the game, Coffeyville was not really ever able to pull close and the game ended with the Pirates getting the victory.
Coffeyville will regroup and hit the road this week with a KJCCC matchup with the Garden City Broncbusters. Game time at Broncbuster Stadium in Garden City Kansas is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 26th.
